almost famous

Over the last few months, I've been making trips to Central New Jersey to spend time photographing celebrity impersonator & actress Michele Marzano as a long-term project for my photojournalism class taught by the wonderful Whitney Johnson of The New Yorker.

Below are a few of my favorite images from this ongoing series.....

sister, sister

This summer I was commissioned to shoot some street style assignments for Refinery29 (featured here & here). While I was scoping out subjects at the Brooklyn Flea Market a few weeks back, two teenage sisters stood out immediately because of their style & warm personalities when I approached them to take their photographs.

Later that week, I met up with Laramie and Logan and found out that they were just in town for the week, visiting from Los Angeles. We spent an awesome evening exploring parts of the Lower East Side, walking along the Williamsburg Bridge, and bonding over mutual interests and love for our California roots.

Laramie (pictured in the first photograph on the right) is entering her freshman year of college at Columbia College in Chicago, check out some of her music & films. Logan (pictured left) is still in high school and an awesome visual artist, check out her instagram.

ich bin ein Berliner

After a week in London, our next spring break destination was Berlin, Germany. During our four day weekend adventure we stayed at a beautiful sunny apartment in the eclectic Kreuzberg neighborhood which had an incredible weekend Turkish market, access to the canal, and a great selection of bars. The atmosphere of Berlin was so inviting and relaxing. The sunny weather made the colors of the city pop, everything appeared so vibrant.

Visiting the Holocaust Memorial was an incredible experience, the whole memorial itself is made out of basic concrete slabs and is somewhat disorderly and confusing in order to represent the uncomprehensibleness of lives and communication lost in the Holocaust.

It felt weirdly symbolic when I came across a bug helplessly suffering, lying on its back after having just been stepped on by a man's foot.

Our last evening spent in Berlin was magical. After sitting by the canal at golden hour sipping beers and chatting, we took a route along the canal and a few strange turns later accidentally came upon a carnival that appeared out of nowhere. As we walked through a dark and barely lit park path we saw the lights of the carnival off in the distance.

We emerged from the dark path and towards the field made bright by the neon colors of the carnival rides. Sounds of carnival game operators and energetic children screaming flooded the area. It felt like walking straight into a scene out of a movie.

All images are film, with the exception of the full-length portrait of Eve.

england, april 2013

For the first week of my two-week-long spring vacation Metin and I traveled to England, spending most of our time in London with the exception of a day trip excursion to the seaside town of Brighton.

London had long been at the top of my list of places to visit, and it was incredible how quick and easy it was to take a two-hour high speed train directly there from Paris. As soon as we arrived at St. Pancras International, it was disorienting yet comforting to hear the familiar sound of the English language being spoken. As much as I'd improved in speaking French over the previous months, I was much in need of a mental break...constant back-and-forth translation can tire the mind.

The week sort of blurs together, as a few days were lost when I came down with a fever and was too weak to go out and sightsee for part of our trip. But for the most part, we were able to visit most all of the 'sights'.

The dreary weather of London is no myth, but on one of the earlier days of our trip we witnessed some beautiful rainy weather. No sarcasm intended, the rain was a positive, it was only light mist and what followed was a beautiful sunset of pink and yellow that framed Big Ben in the distance as we stood over by Buckingham Palace. Unfortunately I only have Instagram'd photographs of that particular sunset...but here are some film and digital photographs from my week in the UK!

One of the most exciting 'sights' for me was the Tate Modern, a museum I'd been dreaming of visiting for years.

London was completely different from what I expected, I hope to explore more of its diverse neighborhoods in the future. Though, I think my favorite part of the week was when Metin & I visited the sweet Lauren Maccabee in Brighton. Lauren showed us all around the town with its charming streets lined with shops and cafés. People were SO friendly and happy and eager to start conversations. The weather wasn't overcast but not quite sunglasses worthy, it was breezy and pleasant.

Metin, Lauren and I drank beers on the beach for a few hours and Maisie Cousins dropped by to chat as well. As seen from my previous post concerning Marseilles & Cassis, I'm starting to find myself falling in love with beach towns.

Posts with photos from Berlin, Rome, and Spain coming sooooon.

P.S. I'm back in NYC full-time as of last week!

flo morrissey / 9mary in paris & london

The lovely Flo Morrissey (also known as 9mary, listen to her beautiful music here) visited Paris in April to perform at a Sofar sounds event at NYU Paris.

A few hours before the show, Flo & I met up over coffee & orange juice at Café Carette by the Eiffel Tower.

Afterwards, we strolled around the 16th arrondissement and enjoyed one of the best days for weather I saw all semester.

A few weeks later when I visited London [Flo's hometown], we met up once again for a few hours to have tea & catch up.

Flo gave me a tour around the stunning Kensington Gardens, in Hyde Park which struck me as a sort of miniature Central Park. Dogs kept running up to us as we lounged in the grass.

Blogging pictures of my travels to London, Brighton, Berlin, Rome, and Spain soon!
